Types of roles
There are a number of different roles needed to staff an election. These roles vary in size, responsibility and work environment depending on whether they are based in a polling station or supporting the count.
Polling Station Roles
The polling staff are responsible for the conduct of the ballot in each polling station, ensuring that the proper voting procedure is followed. Polling station staff ensure that voters are able to cast their vote in secret, free from influence and in a calm atmosphere.
On election day polling staff are required to work from 6 am until after 10 pm without leaving the polling station. They are also required to complete online training and Presiding Officers are required to complete face to face training and collect equipment, prior to polling day.
A Poll Clerk will assist the Presiding Officer to run a polling station. They will help to:
- set up polling station equipment
- issue ballot papers to members of the public
- mark the electoral register
- complete paperwork
Rates of Pay
Poll Clerk: £239.00 for the day (comprising of £200 + £ 30 Training fee + £9 Mileage Allowance)
The fees shown are before deductions.
A Presiding Officer is responsible for the station and will assign work to the Poll Clerks. Previous polling station experience is required.
They will:
- ensure the accuracy of the poll
- account for all of the ballot papers
- collect the ballot box, and deliver it to either Northampton or Towcester when the station closes
- have responsibility for ensuring their polling building is open and closed on the day

Presiding Officer: £328 for the day (comprising of £272 + £40 Training fee + £16 Mileage Allowance)

Counting Staff Roles
We are looking for individuals who are available to work on two days: Friday 2 May and Saturday 3 May 2025 during daytime hours.
The purpose of the Count Team is to open ballot boxes, ensure the contents agree with the Ballot Paper Accounts, and then count the votes for each candidate in the election.
Hours of Work
- Friday 2 May 2025: The hours of work are likely to be 9am – 7pm
- Saturday 3 May 2025: Work will start at 9am and you will be required to stay until the count is complete. There is a guaranteed minimum of 4 hours work.
If you are only available to work on one of the days, you are welcome to express an interest in a role at the count, however please note that we will prioritise individuals who are available on both Friday and Saturday in the first instance.
We are looking to fill the following roles:
The purpose of a Count Assistant is to verify that the number of votes in each ballot box matches the number of ballot papers issued at the polling station and then count the votes for each candidate in the election.
The duties are straightforward but undertaken in an environment that can at times be pressurised as the count takes place in the presence of candidates, their counting agents or other observers. The greatest care must be taken to ensure that mistakes are not made.
Rate of pay
Count Assistant: £14.00 per hour with a guaranteed payment of at least £56 (4 hours) on Saturday.
The fees shown are before deductions.
A Count Supervisor (CS) is responsible for a count team (often comprising 6 to 8 counters) and for opening the ballot boxes and distributing the ballot papers across their team of counters. The Count Assistant Supervisor (CAS) supports them with this activity.
The first stage will be the verification stage, this is to simply verify how many ballot papers are in the box. The second stage is the count where the votes are sorted into each candidate, together with setting aside any proposed rejected or ‘doubtful’ ballot papers.
A CS is required to brief their team on the procedures to be implemented, ensuring you accurately record the total figures.
Rate of pay
Count Assistant Supervisor: £16.50 per hour with a guaranteed payment of at least £66 (4 hours) on Saturday.
Count Supervisor: £18.00 per hour with a guaranteed payment of at least £72 (4 hours) on Saturday.
The fees shown are before deductions.
