If you are in a same-sex civil partnership, you can convert it to a marriage.
How to convert your civil partnership
You need to go to an appointment at a registration office.
This appointment will be with a registrar.
At the appointment, you will sign a legal document called ‘the civil partnership conversion declaration’.
This document means that you have converted your civil partnership into a marriage.
You can go to any registrar office in England and Wales for this appointment.

What to bring to your appointment
You need to bring documents that have your:
- names and ages – passport or birth certificate, along with any name change documents
- address – Council Tax bill, bank statement or photo ID UK driving licence
You must bring original copies.
You also need to bring your civil partnership certificate.
Cost
It costs £45 to convert your civil partnership to a marriage.
This fee is subject to change by the government.

Celebrate your conversion to marriage
After your civil partnership has been converted, we can arrange a ceremony.
There is an additional fee for the ceremony.
You can also choose a 2-stage option for converting your civil partnership.
First, your documents are checked at an appointment with a registrar.
Then you sign the legal document at a separate ceremony.

If you choose this option, your marriage certificate would be available when the full conversion process has finished.
