SEND Support Service - Courses for parents and carers

We offer a range of virtual and face-to-face courses and workshops to help parents who live in West Northamptonshire understand and support their child's Special Educational Need and/or Disabilities (SEND).

Our workshops are available to parents of children 0-19 (unless otherwise specified)

  • Virtual workshops are 90 minutes long
  • Face to face workshops are 120 minutes long

From September 2023 we have introduced booking deposits, these will be refunded once confirmation of attendance is received, if you need to cancel you will receive a refund as long as it is 24 hours prior to start date of course.

All courses and workshops will be arranged subject to demand. If there are insufficient numbers to make a course viable, the event may be cancelled, and you will be informed in advance of the start date.

Courses and workshops

Understand how social communication difficulties affect anger

Type of course

Virtual or face-to-face workshop.

Length of course

2 sessions lasting 90 minutes if virtual, 120 minutes if face to face over 2 weeks.

What the course will include

You will be informed of:

  • anger and emotions in children and young people with a Special Educational Need and Disability (SEND) 
  • strategies to aid regulation 
  • how to improve your confidence in recognising and managing your child’s emotions​
  • practical skills used to track behaviour

Support with anxiety in children with a Special Educational Need or Disability (SEND)

Type of course

Virtual or face-to-face workshop.

Length of course

2 sessions lasting 90 minutes if virtual, 120 minutes if face to face over 2 weeks.

What the course will include

The workshop is intended to aid you on:

  • anxiety in children and young people with SEND​
  • the methods for helping to manage their anxiety
  • improving your confidence in recognising and managing your child’s anxiety

Understand the difficulties surrounding food and SEND

Type of course

Virtual or face-to-face workshop.

Length of course

2 sessions lasting 90 minutes if virtual, 120 minutes if face to face over 2 weeks.

What the course will include

The workshop aims to help you:

  • understand more about difficulties surrounding food and SEND
  • explore strategies and visual resources to support overcoming food and eating difficulties
  • create bespoke resources to support positive change

Support with matters relating to puberty

Virtual workshop – 90 minutes, 1 session

What the course will include

Topics covered will include:

  • physical changes
  • personal care
  • examples of visual supports to aid understanding

These consultations are not suitable for children or young people.

Gain a basic understanding of sensory processing

Type of course

Virtual or face-to-face workshop​.

Length of course

90 minutes if virtual, 120 minutes if face to face.

What the course will include

The workshop is designed to help you:

  • gain a basic understanding of sensory processing
  • consider how sensory processing relates to you and your child
  • understand the formula of sensory circuits and how to set one up

Understanding social communication difficulties and / or autism

These 6-week courses are for parents and carers of children with social communication difficulties and/or autism.

Each session is 90 minutes if virtual, 120 minutes if face to face and held once a week for 6 weeks.

Sessions will enable you to develop a range of support strategies for your child.

Reflections course

For parents and carers of children with social and communication difficulties and / or autism aged 7 years and under.

Spectrum course

For parents and carers of children and young people with social communication difficulties and / or autism aged 8 to 19 years.

Supporting children with toileting issues

Type of course

Virtual.

Length of course

90-minute virtual course.

What the course will include

The workshop will cover:

  • the sequencing of toileting
  • strategies to try and bridge the child's gaps or sticking points (including sensory)
  • show ways to move the sequence on from the child's starting point
  • We cover the sequence from start to finish, break it down into each step and discuss the barriers that might be encountered related to that step and ways to try and overcome them.

Early years workshop to support parents and carers understanding of children’s interests, to help them support development through play. This workshop is suitable for parents and carers of children aged 0 to 5 years.

Type of course

Virtual or face to face workshop.

Length of course

90 minutes if virtual, 120 minutes if face to face.

What the course will include

The workshop aims to tutor you on:

  • developmental age verses chronological age in play
  • understanding communication in play
  • explore how to support children’s interests in play
