Support and resources for bereaved people

If you have experienced a bereavement, there are understanding and compassionate services that can help you in the midst of grief.

Local support, drop-in sessions and wellbeing courses 

  • Counselling - a search facility of private counsellors offering different types of therapy in West Northamptonshire
  • Kelly's Heroes - a Northamptonshire-based organisation offering help and support to anyone affected by suicide
  • NHS talking therapies - these are offered free to anyone aged over 17 and a half and is a self-refer process via the website. There are a range of different therapies on offer and the most suitable one is agreed on after initial assessment
  • Northamptonshire Support After Suicide service - NSAS is a bespoke support service for those who have experienced loss by suicide. With group work, therapeutic and counselling options, family support and more, it is there to meet you where you need
  • Wellbeing Courses | NorthamptonshireMind - Northamptonshire MIND offer courses to help with depression, anxiety and improving wellbeing, as well as signposting to private counsellors

National resources

  • AtaLoss  - an online search directory aimed at helping bereaved people find support and wellbeing in West Northamptonshire
  • Bereavement Advice Support  - practical help and advice on what to attend to when someone dies
  • Bereavement Register - helps to reduce the amount of direct mail sent to the address of a person who has died
  • Brake, the road safety charity - works with communities and organisations across the UK to stop the tragedy of road deaths and injuries, make streets and communities safer for everyone, and support people bereaved and seriously injured on roads  
  • Care for the Family - offer support for those coping with the pain and heartache from a loss of someone close to them 
  • Child Bereavement UK - supports families and educates professionals when a baby or child of any age dies or is dying, or when a child is facing bereavement
  • Child Death Helpline
  • Coroner’s Court Support Service (CCSS) - CCSS is an independent organisation whose trained volunteers will offer emotional and practical support to bereaved families, witnesses and others who are attending an Inquest at a Coroner’s Court
  • Cruse Bereavement Support - the Northamptonshire office is not taking on new referrals at present and directs callers to use their National Helpline and speak to a trained volunteer. It is open Mon-Fri 9.30am-3pm and closed at weekends
  • Disaster Action - Provides resources and information for the bereaved and survivors of major disasters that occur in the UK and overseas
  • Gambling with Lives - Supports families bereaved by gambling related suicide
  • Hub of Hope - A smart phone app which provides information on local support services

  • If U Care Share - A charity promoting emotional wellbeing in young people and supports families affected by suicide
  • INQUEST – A charity, independent of government, providing free advice to people bereaved by a death in custody and detention
  • Mesothelioma Hope - A source of support for those affected by Mesothelioma
  • Murdered Abroad - A support group for families, partners and friends of the victims of murder and manslaughter abroad
  • National Bereavement Service - Provides emotional and legal support to those suffering from a bereavement
  • National Homicide Service - A leaflet produced by Victim Support for those bereaved through murder or manslaughter
  • Papyrus – A national charity for the prevention of young suicide
  • Roadpeace– A national charity for road crash victims
  • Samaritans- A national charity offering support to people and communities in their time of need
  • StrongMen - support for men following bereavement
  • SUDEP Action – Provides support for those affected by epilepsy-related deaths
  • Support After Suicide – Signposts to help and support for those affected by suicide
  • The Compassionate Friends - a charitable organisation of bereaved parents, siblings and grandparents dedicated to the support and care of other similarly bereaved family members who have suffered the death of a child or children from a month old and from any cause
  • The Loss Foundation - a grief foundation that provides free cancer bereavement support across the UK 
  • Tommy’s - a pregnancy charity that provide expert, midwife led advice to families before, during and after pregnancy as well as support for those who have experienced a stillbirth
  • Downloadable Death Notification Form for the Bereaved - Checklist suggesting agencies or organisations to notify when a person has died
  • Widowed and Young (WAY) - the only National Charity in the UK for widowed people aged 50 or under. Peer to peer support group operating with a network of volunteers who have been bereaved at a young age themselves
