Sustainability at West Northants Council

West Northamptonshire Council has made commitments to create and maintain a sustainable West Northants. These commitments include active and current measures as well as future goals.

Our commitments include:

  • achieving Net Zero on all council operations by 2030 and those of residents and businesses by 2045
  • taking a community leadership role for Sustainability in West Northants
  • ensuring all Council strategies and policies are aligned to and contribute to the delivery of the UN Sustainable development goals (SDG)

Baseline Emissions Report

We completed a Baseline Emissions Report showing own emissions for 2021/22. This will help us meet our commitment to achieve Net Zero for Council own emissions by 2030.

Environmental Policy

We achieved Bronze level accreditation to the investors in the Environment scheme and produced an Environmental Policy to outline our high level commitments.

Sustainability Report

We released our first Annual Sustainability Report demonstrating our commitment to sustainability.

Ongoing actions

You can find out more about our ongoing actions below:

We continue to participate and support the ‘No Mow May’ campaign across specific parks, open spaces and road verges where it is safe to do so. This encourages biodiversity and reduces emissions from grass cutting equipment

The council will commit to generating our own renewable energy through various solar arrays. This is with the goal of securing and decarbonising the energy demand of the Council by 2030.

We will install small on roof PV systems (photovoltaic systems, technology that converts sunlight to energy such as solar panels) on buildings with a large electricity consumption. We will also develop large-scale PV installations on our lands and car parks. Sites are currently being assessed

By improving the fabric of the building, we are improving its overall energy efficiency and reducing energy demand in the home. This will reduce energy bill costs for residents and contribute toward our net zero area wide ambitions

The council aims to support the implementation of EV charging facilities on its streets and car parks, and the car parks of any willing partners. We hope to encourage the use of eco-friendly fuels in West Northants. We have drafted the West Northamptonshire Electric Vehicles Infrastructure strategy that should be adopted by the end of 2024

The Council has been appointed as the responsible authority for developing a local nature recovery strategy for West Northamptonshire, working in collaboration with local groups, landowners, and businesses
