Social rented housing
Social rented housing in West Northamptonshire
Social rented housing provides affordable accommodation for households with housing needs. It is sometimes referred to as council housing.
In West Northants, social rented housing is owned by the Council and registered providers, also known as Housing Associations. Registered Providers of social rented housing work in partnership with the Council to let the majority of their homes through the council's housing register.
The West Northamptonshire Housing Allocation scheme
The Housing Allocation Scheme sets out the rules that determine eligibility and qualification to join the housing register. It includes how applicants are prioritised for social rented housing based on their housing needs.
The Housing Allocation Scheme is a Choice Based Letting Scheme (CBL), this allows applicants to have some choice in where they apply to live and bid on the properties that the Council advertises.
The Scheme applies to properties in the West Northamptonshire local housing area that are owned by the Council and owned and / or managed by a Registered Provider.

The housing register
The housing register is the waiting list managed by the Council to allocate available social rented housing in the West Northants area. Applicants who qualify to be on the housing register are awarded a priority band based on their level of housing need.
The demand for social rented housing exceeds availability. Not all applicants are accepted onto the housing register and successful applicants generally wait a number of years before they are offered accommodation. If you do not qualify for the housing register, or you do not want to wait, we would encourage to you explore other options such as private renting.
