Private Rented Accommodation
Private rented housing is an alternative to social housing. It refers to a tenancy with a landlord who owns the property. They lease it to you for a length of time and you must pay rent directly to them.
Finding a property in the private rented sector is a good option as you have a lot of choice about prices.
You can find rented housing through local lettings agents and on property lettings websites. This includes sites like Zoopla, Rightmove, Spareroom and Gumtree.
You should register with as many local letting agencies as possible. Keep in weekly contact with them.
Properties that come onto property lettings websites might already have a waiting list of people wanting to see it. Make sure you are on the waiting list.
Private renting may be more expensive than other rented housing. Landlords can charge whatever they think the market will support. If you are not in work or on low income, you may be able to get help to cover your rental payments.
How much housing benefit or the housing element of Universal Credit depends on your family make-up. This is in accordance with the local housing allowance.
