Your health services

There are lots of local and national health services that you can access.

General Practitioner Surgeries

You need to register with a General Practitioner (GP) surgery as soon as possible. You can decide where to register. Many people choose a GP surgery close to where they live.

A GP can:

  • offer medical advice
  • provide diagnosis
  • prescribe medicines

They will likely be your first point of contact for many physical and mental health concerns.

The GP practice is also responsible for coordinating and managing long-term healthcare. They can refer you to more specialised hospital services.

Pharmacies

Qualified healthcare professionals in pharmacies can offer clinical advice and over-the-counter medicines for a range of minor illnesses, such as:

  • coughs
  • colds
  • core throats
  • stomach aches
  • pains

Pharmacies are where you collect prescriptions that your GP issues.
