Pregnancy advice and information

Finding out that you are going to become a parent can be exciting, but can also leave you with a lot of questions.

These short explainer videos aim to guide you into parenthood, different aspects of pregnancy, and the first few weeks of life for a newborn baby.

However, if you have questions about this event in your life you can discuss options by contacting your GP or visiting the British Pregnancy Advisory Service (BPAS) website.

Keeping active

Staying active during pregnancy has many benefits. It is important to listen to your body and consult healthcare providers if you have any concerns.

Exercise can help prepare the body for labour and reduce complications. Continuing regular exercise is fine if comfortable, but risky activities should be avoided.

Medication during pregnancy

During pregnancy, some medicines are essential for your health, while others should be avoided. This can include certain over-the-counter remedies and recreational substances.

Eating a healthy diet is crucial, and you should take supplements like folic acid and vitamin D.

Folic acid helps prevent defects of the neural tube, which later develops into the baby's brain and spinal cord. Vitamin D supports bone health, and other supplements like iron and calcium are also important.

Talk to your midwife or GP if you have any concerns.

Mental health

Pregnancy can be an emotional and stressful time with ups and downs for you and your family. It is normal to feel anxious, especially if it is your first baby.

Concerns about the birth, your finances and your baby's health are particularly common. Be honest with your midwife, health visitor and GP about your feelings.
